Facial Fat Rejuvenation

While many patients know that the aging process creates wrinkles and fine lines, few have a good understanding of how volume loss can also alter their appearance. Diminished facial fat volume often leads to hollow-looking contours that make the patient look perpetually tired. The facial fat transfer procedure can revitalize the skin, restoring plumpness to the temples, cheeks, lips, and the outer eye region.

What is Facial Fat Transfer?

During facial fat transfer, otherwise known as fat grafting, fat is harvested from the client’s own body, taken from areas of excess such as the thighs, stomach, or flanks. The fat is then injected into the face to revitalize hollowed-out contours.

The procedure is popular because it provides the dual benefit of slimming and sculpting the donor regions. Facial fat transfer is a great option for patients who would like natural enhancement without using fillers or surgery. The procedure can restore fullness and vitality in the cheeks, temples, eye areas, and lips.

How is the Procedure Performed?

Facial fat transfer is usually carried out under local anesthesia unless the patient is receiving another surgical treatment simultaneously or simply prefers general anesthesia. A thin tube, known as a cannula, is used to harvest fat via liposuction from the donor sites. The cells are then prepared for injection through processing in a centrifuge. This purified fat is then injected into the predetermined regions of the face, providing a natural boost in supple fullness.

What Happens After My Procedure?

Most fat transfer patients are able to resume work within the first week following the procedure. That said, every patient has their own unique healing process, and some may require more recovery time. Swelling, bruising, and tenderness in the treatment areas are all common and to be expected. These side effects typically dissipate after a few weeks. Patients may go for light walks as soon as they feel ready, but they are advised to avoid all forms of vigorous exercise for at least 2 to 3 weeks.

Who Is a Good Candidate?

Patients that are unhappy with the effects of volume loss in the face can enjoy the benefits of a facial fat grafting procedure, provided they have ample donor fat to draw from in another area of the physique. As with any surgical procedure, being in good mental and physical health and having realistic expectations for the outcome of the operation are vital. Additionally, patients seeking out this procedure should be non-smokers, as smoking can cause complications and negatively impact the longevity of results.
