Facial Harmony Restoration

As our primary means of communicating and expressing emotion, the face holds significant power and influence in our lives. Burns, congenital defects, inflammation, cancer, trauma, infection, and injury can all disrupt facial harmony and cause self-consciousness. We perform strategic facial reconstruction to give clients a new lease on life along with restored function.

Dr. Pulikkottil and his staff are amazing. I was referred to him by another surgeon for reconstruction during cancer surgery. I cannot express how blessed I feel that he was my surgeon. It was comforting to know I was in the hands of someone as confident, intelligent, and experienced as him. He is an expert. He and his staff have been kind and supportive throughout my recovery and have provided excellent follow-up care. I would highly recommend Dr. Pulikkottil and his team.

What Happens During Facial Reconstruction?

Each procedure at The LaVie Institute is unique, crafted to address the patient’s specific concerns, whether functional, aesthetic, or both. As part of your treatment plan, our board-certified surgeons may perform the following steps:

  • Create autologous tissue flaps, rearranging local tissue to cover a defect
  • Perform grafting of skin tissue, bone, or cartilage in order to restore natural-looking contours, improve comfort, and enhance function
  • Remove redundant skin folds, pockets of fat, or excess tissue
  • Reshape and reconstruct bones to provide the proper facial scaffolding and support
  • Rearrange or tighten the underlying facial muscle groups
  • Remove scar tissue and revise scar trajectories

Facial Reanimation After Facial Nerve Injury

Facial nerves control various facial movements, including smiling, chewing, and furrowing the brow, among others. These nerves power sensory, motor, and parasympathetic functions allowing patients to feel, taste, and even cry. When the facial nerves sustain damage, there can be a high cost both aesthetically and functionally. Facial reanimation is a type of surgery that helps combat nerve damage or trauma, revitalizing your quality of life. Techniques may include temporalis tendon transfer, fascia lata grafting, the creation of a gracilis free flap, cross-facial nerve grafting, masseteric muscle transfer, and hypoglossal nerve transfer.

What Is the Recovery From Facial Reconstructive Surgery?

Most reconstructive surgeries come with some degree of swelling, bruising, pain, and bleeding during the initial recovery stage of 1-2 weeks. Sutures can typically be removed within one week, depending on their location. For skin flaps, dressings and bolsters may be utilized to support facial healing.

Our team will provide a detailed aftercare plan and personalized recovery timeline that goes over wound care, bathing, resuming exercise, and returning to work. We will provide prescriptions for antibiotics and pain medications to ensure your safety and comfort throughout.
