Aesthetic Scar Revision

While scarring is part of the body’s natural wound healing process, scars can reduce aesthetics and compromise function. In extreme cases, scars have even been found to affect mobility and inhibit quality of life. Scar revision is a treatment designed to improve the appearance and texture of scar tissue, revitalizing the skin and boosting the patient’s self-confidence.

What is Scar Revision?

Scar revision can be performed either surgically or non-surgically. It aims to improve the overall texture of scar tissue, as well as the scar size and placement. While scars are generally permanent, scar revision can enhance patient comfort, improve function, and boost self-confidence.

What Treatment Options Are Available for Scar Revision?

  • Topical products — These have proven efficacy for mitigating minor scars, addressing discoloration, and improving skin tone. There is no downtime.
  • Dermal fillers — As the name suggests, dermal fillers work by filling in craters (depressions) in the skin, making the skin look natural and even.
  • Contracture release — Contracture release may include the use of tissue expanders, flap reconstruction, and skin grafting to reduce pulling and pressure in the scarred region and optimize range of motion.
  • Silicone-based products — Silicon-based products are able to address raised scars, improving their appearance and texture.
  • Steroid injections — Similar to the previously-mentioned option, steroid injections are known for their ability to improve patient comfort and flatten raised scars.
  • Laser resurfacing and light-based therapies — These treatments have proved efficacy in improving the color, shape, and texture of scars. Beyond that, there is no downtime.
  • Scar revision surgery — Perhaps the most effective of all options, surgery has a demonstrable ability to reduce the length and width of scars, giving the skin a more appealing aesthetic.
  • Z-plasty — This treatment has the ability to reduce the size of a scar and/or reposition it, making it less noticeable. In addition, it can improve flexibility, allowing the patient to move more easily.

What is the Recovery Process Like?

Recovery from a scar revision treatment depends on the method employed to improve the skin. Most non-surgical treatment methods, such as dermal fillers and injections, require no downtime at all. With revision surgery, on the other hand, patients may need as much as two weeks of recovery time. It is normal for patients to experience some mild swelling, bruising, and tenderness after their scar revision procedure. Clients are generally instructed to take 1-2 weeks of rest before getting back to work or other daily life activities.

Who is a Good Candidate for the Procedure?

A thorough evaluation and analysis of the patient’s skin are performed to determine the best method for treating scarring. A thorough review of the patient’s medical history is then carried out to check for any potential contraindications.

Overall, surgery is not usually recommended for scars that are less than one year old. However, scar revision surgery may be appropriate for certain patients, particularly those dealing with hypertrophic scars, contractures, and facial scars.

Excellent experience from initial consultation, treatment plan, and post-op care.  Dr. Endress truly cared about me as a patient to which I highly recommend his practice.
